1 Dahe 60 Xi 14 Dao Jie Reasonably priced Japanese restaurant serving all the favourites, from steaming bowls of udon noodles to well-sculpted plates of sashimi.
2 Dongfang Dumpling King 39 Zhongyang Dajie The place to be seen in Harbin, with a wait for a table often required. The dumplings here are so good, you may be loath to leave. Everyone else seems to linger for another draught beer, another plate of food.
3 Huamei 112 Zhongyang Jie A Harbin institution, food here is basic but good – the stroganoff comes particularly highly recommended – and unless you go for caviar, it won't break the bank.
4 Portman 53 Xi Qidao Jie A European-style pub and grill with a heavily Russian-influenced menu.
5 Russia 1914 57 Xi Toudao Jie The perfect place for afternoon tea, with an atmosphere to match – you can almost imagine yourself back in the early 1900s. Main meals are also served, but if you're just after a little something, it's hard to beat a cup of tea with Russian bread and jam.
