Central Cambodia

    Map

Central Cambodia is a forgotten territory stretching from north of Phnom Penh through sparsely populated countryside right up to the Thai border. The region is hardly a popular tourist destination: the most that visitors usually see of it is the rice paddies that stretch either side of National Route 6, the major trunk road between the capital and Siem Reap, which cuts across the southern part of the area. But for those itching to get off the tourist trail, central Cambodia has a few ancient temple sites worth visiting, and compared to Angkor Wat they're practically deserted. The starting point is invariably Kampong Thom, the only town of any size hereabouts.

    Highlights

1 Phnom Suntuk This bizarre hilltop pagoda is home to a massive rock-carved reclining Buddha.

2 Sambor Prei Kuk Pre-Angkorian temples uniquely decorated with miniature flying palaces, believed to house the sacred spirits who protect the site.

3 Preah Khan Once the largest temple in Cambodia, this complex still contains numerous ruined monuments hidden in the undergrowth.

4 Preah Vihear Imposing temple poised in a spectacular position on a ridge above the Thai border.
