Dubai Guide
Garhoud
Covering the area between the airport and the Creek, the suburb of Garhoud is an interesting mishmash of up- and downmarket attractions. The Deira City Centre mall is the suburb's main crowd-puller, eternally popular with an eclectic crowd, from Gulf Arabs and Russian tourists to the many expat Indians and Filipinas who live in the down-at-heel suburbs on the far side of the airport.
Just over the road lie the lush green fairways and greens of the Dubai Creek Golf Club, particularly striking when floodlit at night, as is the iconic, modernist clubhouse itself, built in 1993 and still one of the city's most instantly recognizable landmarks, the shape of its uniquely spiky white roofline echoing that of a dhow's sails and masts – like a Dubai remake of the Sydney Opera House.
A short distance down the Creek lies another local landmark, the Dubai Creek Yacht Club, occupying a full-size replica of a ship's bridge, with dozens of beautiful millionaires' yachts moored alongside. There are numerous alluring restaurants in the golf and yacht club buildings, as well as in the Park Hyatt hotel between, whose serene white Moroccan-style buildings, topped with vivid blue-tiled domes, add a further touch of style to the Creekside hereabouts.
