Tunisia Guide
Entry requirements
British, Irish and Canadian citizens need no visa for a stay in Tunisia of up to three months, US citizens for up to four months. Australians, South Africans and New Zealanders need visas, however, and these are valid for stays of up to three months. New Zealanders must obtain visas in advance; Australians and South Africans can get them at borders and ports on entry, though check in advance of your trip, as these things have a habit of changing. Visas cost the equivalent of 44TD; when applying, you'll need to provide three photos, your passport and fill in two forms. Applications at an embassy usually take three weeks to process.
Extending a visa involves a visit, at least two weeks before your period of stay expires, to the Service des Étrangers covering the area you are staying in (the local police station should be able to direct you), with proof of a reason to remain, proof of accommodation (a hotel receipt, for example), four passport photos, and evidence that you can support yourself (take exchange slips and cash, or a card plus proof of funds). Extensions take two to four weeks to process, and usually give three months. Alternatively, pop over to Libya, Malta or Sicily, and get a new tourist stamp on re-entry. Overstaying is a criminal offence, but you may be able to sort it out if you apply in Tunis for exceptional permission to leave the country, at the Direction des Frontières, 35 Rue 18 Janvier
