KwaZulu-Natal

The beachfront

Durban's beachfront, a high-energy holiday strip just east of the centre, is South Africa's most developed seaside, one to avoid unless you enjoy unabashed kitsch and garish amusement parks. This six-kilometre stretch from the Umgeni River in the north to the Point in the south was traditionally called the Golden Mile, but it's becoming known as Mugger's Mile, which is why so many middle-class Gauteng families are breaking the habit of generations and deserting the beachfront for the safer (white, middle-class) sands north and south of Durban.
