Cricket and horseracing

Not surprisingly for a city with such a British heritage, cricket and horse racing are high on the agenda when it comes to spectator sports. The Kingsmead Cricket Ground in the centre ( 031 335 4200) is the principal venue for local and international cricket matches and is home to the provincial cricket team. The horse racing season runs from May to August and centres around the Greyville Race Course, Avondale Road, Greyville ( 031 314 1500). The annual Vodacom Durban July ( www.durbanjuly.info ), which, as the name suggests, takes place during July, is South Africa's premier horse-racing event, drawing bets from across the length and breadth of the country and wildly exhibitionist fashions in the spectator boxes. You'll also have plenty of opportunity to watch rugby in season at Absa Stadium, Walter Gilbert Road, Stamford Hill ( 031 308 8400), home to the local Sharks. The new football stadium being built next to the Absa Stadium will host matches during the 2010 World Cup.
