The Cape Flats
The windswept Cape Flats are exactly that: flat, as well as being barren and windswept, with the M5 acting as a dividing line between it and the southern suburbs. Exclusively inhabited by Africans and coloureds in separate areas, the Flats can be both shocking and heartening, their abject poverty coexisting with a spirit of enterprise and stoicism.
