Shopping

Ensemble Artisanal Avenue Mohammed V, midway between the Koutoubia and the ramparts at Bab Nkob, Medina Opening time: Mon– Sat 8.30am–7pm, Sun 8.30am–1pmThis government-run complex of small arts and crafts shops holds a reasonable range of goods, notably leather, textiles and carpets. Shopping here is hassle-free, and the prices, which are supposedly fixed (though actually you can haggle here too), are a good gauge of the going rate if you intend to bargain elsewhere. At the back are a dozen or so workshops where you can watch young people learning a range of crafts including carpet-weaving.

Entreprise Bouchaib Complexe d'Artisanat 7 Derb Baissi Kasbah, on Rue de la Kasbah near the Saadian Tombs www.bouchaib.net Opening time: Daily 8.30am–8pmThe "fixed" prices here are only slightly higher than what you might pay in the souks, and, though you won't be allowed to browse freely, the sales assistants who follow you round are generally quite charming and informative. In particular it's a good place to check out carpets and get an idea of the absolute maximum prices you should be paying.

Boutique Bel Hadj 22 & 33 Souk Fondouk Louarzazi, off the north side of Place Bab Fteuh, Medina This is a good place to look for chunky pieces of jewellery.

Abdellatif Bellawi 56 & 103 Kissariat Lossta (one of the passages in the Kissaria between Souk el Kebir and Souk Attarine), Medina A good place for big silver Berber bangles, as well as lots of beads from West Africa, the Sahara and Yemen as well as Morocco.

Amazonite 94 Bd El Mansour Eddahbi, Guéliz Swish shop with some lovely pieces of smarter and pricier jewellery.

Maison du Kaftan Marocain 65 Rue Sidi el Yumani, Medina This shop has some beautiful but pricey robes, tunics and kaftans in shimmering silks and velvets, and sells to celeb customers like Jean-Paul Gautier and Samuel L. Jackson, whose photos are displayed on the wall.

Kulchi 1 Rue des Ksour, Medina Chic little boutique selling Moroccan clothes aimed at Western women.

Femmes de Marrakech 67 Souk el Kchachbia, Medina Right in the heart of the souks is a fair-trade co op selling excellent hand-made cotton and linen dresses and kaftans.
