Menara Gardens

    Opening time: Daily 8am–6pm

    Price: Free

Address: Avenue de la Menara, southwest of Hivernage

The Menara Gardens are a popular picnic spot for Marrakshi families, as well as tourists, centred on a rectangular pool providing a classic postcard image beneath a backdrop of the High Atlas mountains. Aside from the pool, the garden is largely filled with olive trees. It couldn't be simpler to find: just follow from Bab Djedid, by the Hôtel La Mamounia. In summer, it has several drinks stalls.

The Menara, originally dating from the twelfth century, was restored and its pavilions rebuilt in the mid-nineteenth century. The poolside minzah (daily 8am–12.30pm & 3–6pm; 15dh) is said to have replaced an original Saadian structure. At night, except in January and February, the pool becomes the scene for a Marvels and Reflections show (Mon– Sat 10pm, daily in April, May & Aug; 250dh or 400dh), featuring fireworks, dancers and acrobats. There's a ticket office at the park entrance, but it only seems to open very sporadically; for further information, call 024 43 95 78. Should you want to get up on a camel for a little jaunt, there's usually someone by the park entrance offering rides.
