Getting around

It is a fairly long walk between Guéliz and the Medina, but there are plenty of petits taxis, which will take you between the two for around 10–15dh. There are taxi ranks at most major intersections in Guéliz, and in the Medina in the northwest corner of Place Djemaa el Fna, outside the Grand Hôtel Tazi, and at the Place des Ferblantiers end of Avenue Houman el Fetouaki. Bus #1 and #16 also run along Avenue Mohammed V between Guéliz and the Koutoubia in the Medina.

Petits taxis have meters, which they should use; most trips should cost around 10–15dh during the day, or 15–20dh at night, when there is a surcharge on the meter price. If a taxi driver doesn't want to use the meter, it is because they intend to overcharge you. If you get a petit taxi out to somewhere on the periphery, such as the palmery or one of the golf courses, and especially if the driver doesn't try to pull any stunts over the fare, it's worth getting a phone number to call them for the return journey.

In addition to taxis, there are calèches, horse-drawn cabs which line up on Place Foucault near the Koutoubia, and at some of the fancier hotels. These can take up to five people and are not much more expensive than petits taxis – though be sure to fix the price in advance, particularly if you want a tour of the town.

An alternative for exploring the more scattered city sights, such as the Agdal and Menara gardens or the palmery, is renting a bicycle or moped; bicycles will cost around 100dh a day, mopeds more like 300dh. Grands taxis can also be chartered by the day for around 200dh – very reasonable if split between four people (the taxis take up to six passengers, but four is comfortable). Negotiate at the ranks in Djemaa el Fna or by the post office in Guéliz. By law grands taxis have to display prices for specified trips; these prices are per trip and not per person, as drivers sometimes claim.

If you don't have much time and you want to scoot around Marrakesh's major sights in a day or two, the hop-on hop-off Marrakech Tour bus ( 025 06 00 06, www.marrakech-tour.com , though the website is currently only in French and Spanish) could be for you. Using open-top double-deckers, with a commentary in several languages including English, the tour follows two circular routes. They are valid for 24hr, so even if you start your tour after lunch, you can finish it the following morning.
