Golden Dragon Shedwan Garden Hotel
065/355-5051 One of a string of modern restaurants outside the Shedwan hotels with traditional red lanterns and replica Ming-vase decor, and authentic fare cooked by a Chinese chef. The crab and corn soup is recommended. Price: Meat dishes from £E50, seafood from £E60, and an extensive imported wine list.

Mandarine Shedwan Garden Hotel
065/354-7007 Excellent Lebanese restaurant with a pleasant street-side patio. Serves decent mixed grills, shawarma and kebabs from £E40.
5 Pizzeria Tarboush Sharia Abdel Aziz Mustafa. Small, simple pizzeria, with more than a dozen not-so-different-tasting varieties on the menu (from around £E10). Start with a margarita for £E1 and build on to it. No alcohol.

065/354-9630 One of Hurghada's classiest seafood places, with a lovely rooftop terrace with pot plants and smart a/c dining downstairs. Sells alcohol, including cocktails. Price: Main dishes start at £E20
8 Young Kang Sharia Sheikh Sebak. Reasonable Chinese– Korean restaurant, with fair-sized portions at moderate prices. Sells beer.
9 Abo Khadega East of Sigala Square. A small workers' café where you can get a tasty meal of soup, rice, salad, beans and grilled meat from £E8.
10 Agra Near the GolfHotel. Excellent Indian restaurant serving a variety of dishes, including lamb biryani and tandoori murgh (barbecued chicken in yoghurt). Price: Mains around £E30–40
11 Coppa Cabana Sheraton Rd A corner café, popular with tourists, who come to enjoy real espresso and the very tempting range of ice-cream flavours.
12 El-Joker Near the police station in Sigala Square Excellent seafood restaurant with generous portions at very good prices – try the calamari soup. Price: Mains £E25–35 Opening time: Daily 11pm–1am

065/344-2410 This spacious branch of the famous Cairo chain serves decent Egyptian food at reasonable prices, and has a great view of the harbour. Sells beer and does takeaway. Good for vegetarians. Opening time: Daily 8.30am– midnight
15 Fish House Next to McDonald's Reasonably priced sushi and formal fish restaurant upstairs with large picture windows looking out over Sheraton Rd, and a coffee shop downstairs; takeaways available. Opening time: Daily 9am–10pm
16 Moby Dick 150m north of McDonald's Much patronised by tour groups, this restaurant serves both Egyptian and Western food, with very good falafel, as well as pizza, pasta and cold Stella. Opening time: Daily noon–2am
17 Spaghetti Near McDonald's Steak and seafood restaurant with large outdoor seating area. Good value and popular with families.
