    1 Fair Trade Center Sharia el-Karnak, near Midan el-Haggag 095/238-7015 www.egyptfairtrade.com The local outlet for a Cairo-based NGO marketing the work of nine handicrafts cooperatives, including Hegaza bowls carved from lemon, orange or tamarisk wood; Garagos pottery; beadwork from Sinai; recycled paper from Cairo; and cottons, silks and linens from Akhmim. Opening time: Daily 9am–10pm

    2 Marina's Shop Beside the Dar al-Umda restaurant in the grounds of the Mercure Inn High quality galabiyyas, kaftans and other cottons, at decent prices.

    3 Mohammed Abdel Aziz Sharia al-Souk The owner is always willing to discuss the finer points of the carpets, embroidered robes and other textiles he stocks.

    4 Radwan Bazaar Sharia Khalid Ibn Walid, opposite the Pyramisa Isis Hotel This place stocks probably the widest choice of styles of jewellery in Luxor. Prices are nominally fixed, but they'll negotiate over sizeable orders.

    5 Winter Akhmeen Gallery Corniche el-Nil, beside the stairway to the Winter Palace Hotel 095/238-0422 This small shop is stuffed with hand-woven cotton, silk and linen from the women's weaving cooperative in Akhmim. Prices are £E50–150 per metre, reflecting the high quality. They also make galabiyyas and shirts to order.
