The Nile Valley
Arrival
Arriving in Luxor can be stressful, especially at the train station, where you're mobbed by hotel touts thrusting cards under your nose and bad-mouthing rival establishments. As most places are less than fifteen minutes' walk away, it is fine to strike out towards your preferred option without further ado. Arriving by bus is also a headache: the terminal is way east outside town and taxis demand £E25–30 for a ride into Luxor. From Luxor Airport, the cost of a taxi into town is officially £E20–25 depending on the size of the car and your destination, but few drivers will agree to under £E40. Travellers who've come up from Aswan by felucca are dependent on minibuses or taxis from Edfu or Kom Ombo, whose drivers may well rendezvous with hustlers at the checkpoint south of Luxor and steer you to their hotels. Cruise boat passengers may find themselves moored within walking distance of Luxor or Karnak temples – or at the New Corniche far outside town (£E15–20 by taxi).
