The Nile Valley
Lillian Trasher Orphanage
Across the river, the Lillian Trasher Orphanage (Malga Trasher) is the largest, best-known institution of its kind in Egypt (there's another famous one in Tanta, funded by pop star Mohammed Tharwat). Founded in 1911 by Florida-born Lillian Trasher, who came to Egypt at the age of 23 and died in her adopted homeland in 1961, the orphanage is a source of pride for Assyut's Copts, and visitors are welcome (as are donations). Microbuses (50pt) from the centre stop nearby, or you can get a taxi (£E5).
