The Delta
Fort of Qaitbey
Opening time: Daily 9am–4pm, Ramadan 9am–3pmPrice: £E12Seven kilometres out of town, the Fort of Qaitbey, built in 1479 to guard the mouth of the Nile, served as the first line of defence against the Crusaders and was later reinforced by the French, whose use of masonry imported from Upper Egypt led to the discovery of the Rosetta Stone. The fort can be reached from town by green-and-white taxi (£E30 round-trip) or fishing boat (£E50 after bargaining). For an alternative river trip, you can visit the tranquil old Mosque of Abu Mandar, 5km upriver from Rosetta; taxi-boats leave from the docks near Midan al-Horriya – expect to pay £E20–30 after haggling.
