The Canal Zone
Arrival
Like the other Canal cities, Suez has regular bus and service-taxi connections with Cairo (every 30min 6am–8.30pm; 2hr; £E8). Both types of vehicle arrive at Suez's Arba'in Terminal (
062/322-0753) on the Cairo road on the outskirts of town; from here you can take a taxi (£E5–10) or a microbus (50pt) into the town centre. The trainstation, 1500m west of the city centre's Arba'in Market (50pt by minibus), is served by six daily trains from Cairo (£E6) that take a little over two hours, and which run on to Ismailiya (6–7hr).
For the benefit of people arriving by ship, the tourist office (officially Mon– Wed & Sun 8am–8pm;
062/333-1141) and tourist police (24hr;
062/333-3543) are way out on the edge of Port Tewfiq (Bur Tewfiq in Arabic) on Suez Canal Street; you can catch a microbus out along Sharia el-Geish as far as the Passenger Terminal. The tourist office can supply a decent map of the city and other useful information but it's understaffed and not always open.
