The Anfushi Tombs
Opening time: daily 9am–4.30pm
Price: £E20
Tram #15 runs on to the Ras el-Tin ("Cape of Figs") quarter, where you can alight at Sharia Ras el-Tin to find the rock-cut Anfushi Tombs, uncovered in 1901. Sited in pairs around a staircase leading to an open court, the four tombs are painted to simulate costly alabaster or marble and belonged to third-century BC Greek Alexandrians who adopted Ancient Egyptian funerary practices. The right-hand set has pictures of Egyptian gods, warships and feluccas; a Greek workman has also immortalized his mate's virtues in graffiti. Both the left-hand tombs have vestibules with benches for the deceased's relatives to eat and drink in their memory. Hang around and a keeper should appear to unlock the tombs.
