Egypt Guide
Alexandria and the Mediterranean coast
Arrival
West Delta and Superjet buses drop passengers at the 15th May Station in Sidi Gaber, east of downtown, from where you can reach the centre by minibus #1, tram #2, #25 or #35 (25pt), or taxi (locals pay £E5, foreigners around £E10). Trains from Cairo usually stop at Sidi Gaber Station (north of the bus terminal) before terminating at Masr Station, about 1km south of downtown Midan Sa'ad Zaghloul, which you can reach by walking up Sharia Nabi Daniel (10–15min). Service taxis are likely to wind up on Midan el-Gumhorriya, outside Masr Station, but might terminate at the outlying Moharrem Bey depot; from there, catch a minibus (25pt to Midan el-Gumhorriya downtown) or a taxi (£E5) northwest to the centre.
Alexandria is served by three airports. EgyptAir use Nozha, 5km south of the city, as a stopover on some flights to Europe; other airlines use the new international terminals at El-Alamein or Burg al-Arab airport, respectively 130km and 60km from Alex. Public transport is limited to bus #555 (scheduled to coincide with flight arrivals and departures; £E6) from Burg al-Arab to Midan Sa'ad Zaghloul. A taxi to Alex from El-Alamein airport costs £E300, from Burg al-Arab £E80–100, from Nozha £E20.
