Essaouira – have heard great things but didn’t manage to go on a shortish trip last year. And to camp (in style) in the Saharan desert; it looks like an absolutely amazing experience.
it all depends on your interests. Are you looking for great architectural buildings, for the atmosphere of the souks, for the desert or the mountains… Morocco has everything of this but not always on one spot. Marrakech remains the topper but has become very turistic and expensive.Although it remains a very beautifull city where atmosphere, architecture and culture go hand in hand. Rabat is more quietly and royal (the king has his official palace in Rabat), the souk there is great and cheaper as the one in Marrakech. There is a lovely pirate quartier at the seaside, not to miss! And if you want to see the heart of Morocco: visit Meknes and Fez, you’ll be amazed of the beautiness and atmosphere of the medressa’s!
I’d love to go to the Atlas mountains. Had to make the call between mountain and beach when I went last year, but I would definitely try the mountains next time. Sounds like you can do some fantastic treks, and the scenery looks beautiful. I should imagine the peace and quiet would be a pleasant break from the hectic activity of Morocco’s towns and cities as well…
