Hi Coolmom66,
Sounds like a really fun trip – here are a few ideas to start you off:
If you’re not based in Miami already, you’ll want to spend a little time enjoying the Hispanic heartbeat of the city, via traditional Cuban restaurants and some of the best seafood in the States (stone crab a speciality), the sun-drenched Art Deco splendour of South Beach, and nightlife to test even the most seasoned party animal – Club Space & Nikki Beach are huge draws.
Further up the coast, resorts mingle with Mediterranean-tinged townscapes before you reach Cape Canaveral and the Kennedy Space Center. The complex covers plenty for a leisurely day of exploration, and there’s the nearby Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge to restore some natural balance after you’ve marvelled at all the space-age surprises next door.
The city of St Augustine dates from the 16th century, its compact European feel and Spanish colonial architecture offering a glimpse of early settler life. Historical highlights include the Castillo de San Marcos and the Colonial Quarter.
Into Georgia, the Mighty 8th Air Force Museum (outside Savannah, just off I-95) is a fascinating stop, perfect for WWII buffs. Savannah itself is a charming town, its preserved historic buildings on every corner, cobbled waterfront and cool, shaded squares make it a pleasure to explore on foot.
In this corner of the States, the famous Southern charm shines through at every turn. Speaking as a Brit, hearing ‘I just love your accent’ never fails to win me over…
Hope that helps – do look up the latest Rough Guide to Florida (9th edition, published last summer), and check back here for tips on the Carolinas and Virginia from fellow travellers – handing over the baton now!
