Islands around Europe
(This is the very early stage of our plans)
Any advice on where to go (history/food/pls some sunshine too) during the 1st week of May2014?
It will be our wedding anniversary and we want to go somewhere nice for a couple of days. (Santorini/Gran Canaria/Madeira)?
For history, food and sunshine (not to mention romance) you can’t beat Sicily. The weather in May is generally warm and sunny, the towns are pleasantly free of crowds, the beaches all but empty, and there’s no shortage of culture – you could time your visit to coincide with the Greek theatre festival in lovely Siracusa, with performances in the ancient theatre, or simply take your pick from the array of archeological sites and historic towns all over the island. There’s plenty on offer for foodies too. The town of Poggioreale (near Trapani on the western coast) hosts a cheese festival in May, and local restaurants dish up delicious spring specialities such as fritella (a sweet-and sour dish of fresh peas, artichokes and fava beans) and pasta con le sarde (pasta with sardines and wild fennel).
