Camping in Australia
We are planning on hiring a camper and travelling from Sydney to Cairns over a three week period in march – april 2013. We would like to stay in campsites along the way but don’t know whether we need to book these in advance or whether can we just turn up?

Easter falls in the middle of that period, and most camping sites will be full and also more expensive, especially those along the coast or near popular attractions. Here’s a list of public holidays to watch out for:

As well, there are the school holidays between terms, which vary from state to state. These are also periods when destinations become busy/expensive:
It’s certainly worth booking ahead for the Easter weekend – some sites, for example Airlie Beach, already have limited availability. You might want to consider joining one of the big holiday park networks such as big4 or discovery holiday parks – you can then benefit from discounts on multiple bookings. If you haven’t hired a van yet check out wickedcampers.com.au/ who are offering a 50% discount this weekend.
