Base on the Amalfi Coast
I guess it depends on what you want from the Amalfi Coast. Staying in Sorrento, you’re 40ish minutes drive away, and then once you get there, you do more driving. And it’s a pretty demanding drive, particularly in summer (although in April you should be ok), with severe bends and wiggles that can test the hardiest of travellers (car sickness, here we go).
We stayed in the hills just north of Sorrento – an hour away from the Amalfi Coast – and I think if I had my time again, I’d probably stay on the coast itself. It felt like we spent the whole day in the car, me feeling car sick, my husband sweating over avoiding kamikazee Italian drivers. But obviously that comes at a price; nice hotels on the coast are pretty pricey!
If you’re planning to spend a day on the Amalfi Coast, and no longer, then stay elsewhere (Sorrento is fun and lively and a v good base; I don’t know Salerno, unfortunately), but if you want to explore the coast for a couple of days or more, I’d stay there. Ravello is cute, Positano is expensive and busy in the summer but pretty, and Praiano is a smaller alternative.
Despite the car sickness, though, there are pretty amazing views and it’s a wonderful experience!
