Any no-go areas while enjoying outdoors?
I believe some former Eastern-bloc countries, including Slovenia, have had problems with unrecovered mines in the country-side. Is there any such danger in Croatia, particularly near any popular hiking routes? Any advise on how to spot and deal with such danger?
There are unrecovered land mines left in Croatia though after almost two decades of mine clearing these are restricted to remote agricultural areas (666 sq km or 1.2% of the total land area). Known minefields are clearly fenced off with red danger signs displaying a skull and crossbones. CROMAC (the Croatian Mine Action Centre) maintains that all major tourist attractions are clear of mines. The best advice, though, if you are intending to head to remote wilderness areas (inc hiking and whitewater rafting) is to seek expert advice from local guides.
