Wat Phra Mahathat
In its heyday as the capital of the Thai kingdom, Ayutthaya was so well endowed with temples that sunlight reflecting off them was said to dazzle from 5km away. The overgrown Wat Phra Mahathat – the epitome of Ayutthaya’s atmosphere of faded majesty – was built to house the remains of the Buddha himself.
