Surfers, Bay of Martyrs
Situated near the town of Peterborough and located within the Bay of Islands coastal park, the Bay of Martyrs offers 2.5 km of southwest-facing bay characterized by sheer limestone cliffs and striking rock formations. The numerous reefs here protect the beaches and offer breaks for surfers offshore. According to local oral history, the bay obtained its ominous-sounding name from when European settlers killed a large group of aborigines by driving them off the bay’s cliffs into the sea.
