St Peter's dome
St Peter’s is a hotchpotch of styles, bridging the gap between Renaissance and Baroque with varying levels of success. It is, however, the principal shrine of the Catholic Church, and as such it can’t fail to impress: worked on by the greatest Italian architects of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, it occupies a site rich with historical significance. In size, meanwhile, it beats most other churches hands down. Even throngs of nuns, tourists, pilgrims and locals never seem to fill its vastness.
