As the sun sets, the area’s famed Art Deco buildings – a stretch of pastel yellows, blues and oranges – are bathed dramatically in the fading sunlight, vintage cars pull up outside the latest place to be seen and pretty hostesses flash synthetically manufactured smiles at prospective punters.
