Montery Bay Aquarium
Monterey had been the sardine capital of the western world until overfishing sent the business into terminal decline in the 1940s. The area received a boost in 1984 with the opening of the magnificent Monterey Bay Aquarium – one of the largest, most stunning displays of underwater life in the world. Some 1.8 million visitors a year press their noses against the vast windows of the aquarium’s tanks.
