Monk
The quasi-oasis of Wadi Natrun, just off the Desert Road between Cairo and Alexandria, is famous for its four walled monasteries, which date back to the dawn of Christian monasticism, providing spiritual leadership for Egypt’s Copts for the last 1500 years. The monks’ black garments symbolize their death to the world of bodily desires; their hoods are embroidered with twelve crosses, after Christ’s disciples.
