Jaisalmer Fort
Made of soft yellow Jurassic sandstone, the ramparts of this honey-coloured citadel rise from the sands of the Thar Desert like a scene from the Arabian Nights. Two thousand people still live within its walls and the fort is also home to a number of Hindu and Jain temples. Rampant commercialism may have dampened the romantic vision somewhat, but Jaisalmer deservedly remains one of India’s most popular destinations.
