Once the haunt of Lawrence of Arabia, the incredible desert moonscape of Wadi Rum, south of the Shara mountains in Jordan, has been weathered over millennia into bulbous domes and weird ridges and textures. The intervening corridors of soft red sand only add to the image of the mountains as monumental islands in a dry scene; unsurprisingly, the networks of canyons and ravines offer opportunities galore for exploration.
