Centrale Montemartini statue
A former electricity generating station in the workaday district of Ostiense, Rome’s Centrale Montemartini was requisitioned to display the cream of the Capitoline Museums’ sculpture while the main buildings were being renovated, and was so popular that it became a permanent outpost of that venerable institution. The huge rooms of the power station are ideally suited to showing off ancient sculpture, although checking out the massive turbines and furnaces has a fascination of its own.
