Originally built last century for the workers building the Sacré-Coeur, the Grand Hotel de Clermont is a well known landmark of this historical neighborhood. It later became, a convent and eventually an hotel busy with philosophers, writers, painters and journalists living everything that Montmartre's life as to offer. So if you are a fundamentalist of any kind or of any creed, Montmartre might not be the ideal place for you. In short, not a place for bigotry. If the sex-shops or other Montmartre cabarets and clubs offend you, please book yourself an hotel in another neighborhood. Otherwise, you will find here a genuine welcome at it's best. Meeting genuine locals with fantastic hearts. Other smart travelers like you wanting to share and mingled. You'll discover the last Montmartre bar that as not given in to marketing to your run of the mill tourist crowd. You'll find the bar as it was in the 1920's with the same "Zinc", just like Edith Piaf or Serge Gainsbourg saw it. The building has been renovated while respecting has much as possible the historical structures, staircases, stone walls, original bar from the 1920 etc... No elevators. You will climb the steps that Edith Piaf climbed or Emmanuelle Béart, Marcel Mouloudji. Bernard Dimey, Manu Chao, Roger Tabra and so many others to numerous to mention. In 1929, Édith Piaf took here, her first room at the Grand Hotêl of Clermont at the tender age of only 14 years old. She made this place her nest in Montmartre, making her first steps as a street singer in Pigalle and Menilmontant, where she earned her nickname "Piaf". Years passed and in 1948, she returned to join Marcel Cerdan who trained in the boxing gym nextdoor. As the Café was at the time, Marcel Cerdan's deuxième bureau. Here is the real Montmartre ... Chez Ammad (the hotel's café) is the last neighbourhood pub where the locals still gather. People from all around the world come here to discover this mythical place which has retained all of it's original flavor ...
