Downtown is short on inexpensive places to stay. Jesse James slept at the historic St James Hotel, near the Pettus Bridge at 1200 Water Ave (t 334/872-3234, w http://www.historichotels.org; $81–100), which has rooms with balconies and river views. The best of several soul-food restaurants is the Downtowner, 1114 Selma Ave (Mon–Fri 7am–2.30pm; t 334/875-5933).
