Arrival, information and accommodation

Birmingham Airport is four miles from downtown; call Yellow Cabs (around $22) on t 205/252-1131. The Greyhound station lies on 19th Street N, between Sixth and Seventh avenues – a rough area – while Amtrak pulls in downtown at 1819 Morris Ave. The visitor centre is just off I-20/59 at 2200 Ninth Ave N (Mon–Fri 8.30am–5pm; t 205/458-8000, w flybirmingham.com). Birmingham has two free listings magazines: The Birmingham Weekly (w birminghamweekly.com) and the Black and White (w http://www.bwcitypaper.com). Although downtown hotels are pricier than the chains near the highway, they’re more characterful and many offer special rates at the weekend, when downtown gets deserted.
