Practicalities

The Greyhound bus station is downtown at 180 9th St N (t 727/898-1496). The Chamber of Commerce is at 100 2nd Ave N (Mon–Fri 8am–7pm, Sat 9am–7pm; t 727/821-4715, w http://www.stpete.com). Accommodation in St Petersburg can be less costly than at the beaches. The area is also rich in charismatic B&Bs, such as Dickens House, 335 8th Ave NE (t 1-800/381-2022, w http://www.dickenshouse.com; $131–160). For sheer luxury, stay at Renaissance Vinoy Resort, 501 5th Ave NE (t 1-888/303-4430, w http://www.renaissancehotels.com/tpasr; $201–300). Hearty, economical Cuban food (try the Ybor City-style Cuban sandwich) can be had at Tangelo’s Grill, 226 1st Ave N (t 727/894-1695). Alternatively, try Moon Under Water, 332 Beach Drive NE (t 727/896-6160); overlooking the waterfront, this inexpensive British tavern is well known for its cocktails and curries.
