Arrival and information

One of the most exciting things about Valdez is getting here; both car and ferry rides are unforgettable. The Richardson Highway holds epic scenery: alpine meadows, mountain glaciers, icy Thompson Pass and waterfall-fringed Keystone Canyon. There is no regular bus service, but ferries from Cordova or Whittier dock at the end of Hazelet Avenue (t 907/835-4436). ERA Aviation (t 1-800/866-8394, w http://www.flyera.com) flies twice daily from Anchorage (from $190 return) to the airport four miles east, from where taxis (t 907/835-2500) downtown cost around $10. The visitor centre (summer Mon–Fri 8am–7pm, Sat 9am–6pm, Sun 10am–5pm; t 907/835-4636, w http://www.valdezalaska.org) is on Fairbanks at Chenega Street.
