Five kilometres east of Cividale lies the magical Valle del Natisone, an area of wild natural beauty dominated by the region’s highest mountain, Mount Matajur (1643m). This is a landscape of rushing rivers and steep forested hills, dotted with tiny stone villages linked by a network of walking trails – indeed, the best way to explore is on foot. The area is completely cross border in character, neither Italian nor Slovenian but an intriguing mix of both. It’s also a foodie heaven and holds its own food festival Invito a Pranzo –“Come for Lunch” – every autumn (details on w invitoapranzo.it).
