Overlooking the city from the rocky mountain, the fortified Hohensalzburg  is Salzburg’s key landmark. You can get up here using the oldest funicular in Austria from Fesstungsgasse behind the Dom, although the walk up isn’t as hard as it looks. Begun around 1070, the fortress gradually became a more salubrious courtly seat. Included in the price is an audioguide tour of the observation tower – with spectacular views – and battlements, separate access to the impressive state rooms and various exhibitions. On summer, evenings (7–9.30pm), entrance to the ramparts is free, providing a good feel for the place.
