Shopping: Aboriginal art

Alice Springs has become the country’s foremost centre for Aboriginal art and crafts and Todd Mall is full of galleries. The most popular artworks are the dot paintings, which derive from the temporary sand paintings once used to pass on sacred knowledge during ceremonies. While serious collectors pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for top-name artists, you can pick up finely crafted indigenous art for well under $1000. Always buy from dealers who have relationships directly with the artist. Souvenir shops on Todd Mall also sell paintings starting from around $30, although such pieces are purely decorative. The more you spend, the more chance there is of getting a discount, shipping and insurance included. Reputable galleries should provide certificates or labels of authenticity with each artwork and subscribe to the Indigenous Art Code.
