Accommodation and eating

Most accommodation in Unzen consists of upmarket resort hotels, but there are a few reasonable mid-range choices, as well as a campsite (t 0957/73-3636; closed Dec–March) downhill from the post office. Dining options are more limited, so you’re best off taking meals in your hotel, but the restaurant at Fukuda-ya serves sizzling plates of yōgan (lava) soba noodles big enough for two and delicious sweet potato ice cream, among other inexpensive dishes (daily 11am–10pm).
