Though the journey is not without interest, it’s a long, slow haul of 150km on National Route 64 from Kompong Thom to TBENG MEANCHEY. Passing by the Boeng Peae Wildlife Reserve, a (theoretically) protected area, gives some idea of the dense forest cover which used to blanket the country. The road is passable year-round, but it’s not yet surfaced, so depending on the season the journey can take from four to eight hours. In fact, this is one of the few remaining trips in Cambodia where you may end up taking a pick-up as often they are the only vehicles able to negotiate the difficult road conditions. If so try to avoid travelling in the back, as it’s easy to get thrown off when the vehicle pitches from side to side.
