I’m travelling to Rome with my family in July and we’ll spend 6 days there. Could you please suggest some kind of cheap accommodation? Should we search ‘casa vacanza’s? Thanks!

It might be worth looking at apartments for a 6-day stay, as you suggest. A few hotels rent out apartments, and a number of agencies do short lettings. In our Rome Pocket guide, we suggest At Home (the website is seemingly down at the moment, but have a look at http://www.at-home-italy.com/ when it’s back up and running again) and Cross Pollinate (http://www.cross-pollinate.com/ – which is run by the owners of great little B&B The Beehive: http://www.the-beehive.com).
Hope that gives you some ideas and that you find the right place for your family. Enjoy your trip!
Typically Rome can be a very expensive place to stay however there are a few options if you are willing to stay in hostels or a B&B like Lucy mentioned above! MJ Hostels offers beds from £18 and currently has a 72% rating on Hostelworld – it’s also only 2 mins from Rome’s main station so you won’t be walking around for hours trying to find it when you arrive!
Similarly, the Wow Roma B&B Hostel offers a 2 person private bed at £26 per night (per person) and is only minutes from Rome’s Termini station and has easy bus connections to all Rome’s attractions.
Have you looked at http://www.housetrip.com/en/rome? There are quite a few affordable apartments, considering the cost would be split between all of you.
Hope you have a great time!
Also definitely check out https://www.airbnb.co.uk/. I used this when I went to Rome in October and it made such a difference, thanks to a great host who gave us loads of tips on good places to eat and shop.
I had a nice time recently at a 4 star called Leon’s Place, although a bit on the steep side. Great breakfast. Central, walking distance from Trevi fountain etc. For a night’s treat I’d recommend it!
