I am interested in Volunteering in Nepal or China and am wondering if anyone has any first hand experience with particular organizations or agencies. I was thinking I would join with a non-profit so that I know there is no misuse of funds or scams. But I’d just like to hear some first hand experiences for a reference. Thanks.

Hmm, seems my post drifted to the ether, so I’ll post again…
“I was thinking I would join with a non-profit so that I know there is no misuse of funds or scams.”
No guarantees of that anywhere. But try http://www.idealist.org – there are loads of good companies in there if you sift through. International in scope.
Oh god, this is a massive bag of worms here.
First question, what are your qualifications and skills? Are you a professional? What can YOU offer the organisation or charity? Are you a doctor, nurse or medic? Are you a conservation specialist? A vet? Or are you expecting them to make use of you without any of these or any other qual?
Second question, what ‘volunteering’ are you expecting to do?
Thirdly, what do you hope to gain out of the experience?
Final question, what research have you done on the area? No offence intended at all but from your question it sounds like very little.
First of all, you need to stay away from any of the voluntourism outfits that charge you for the ‘privilege’ of menial labour.
Secondly you need to research the field you want to help in and gain skills and quals that can genuinely help them.
The questions were asked many time ago. However, I would like to suggest a website to future volunteers ( http://sustainablevolunteering.org/ ) who are interested to learn about sustainable volunteerism.
hi this is kumar from nepal.
In which sector you wanna do volunteer. I think it will be great if you can contact direct to where you wanna volunteer.
if you go through organization non of them are non-profit organization its just their name.
if want to volunteer in pokhara i know some places where you can join. if you need information about that places feel free to let me know you can join there directly with out any organization.
you are most welcome to participate volunteer in Nepal, but it depends on you whether which sector you choose like teaching in school, teach games in school, help in the medical, work in the field with the local people, work in the orphanage home, work in the child care or any others. It would be great if you could join and share your experiences with us. Recently we have sponsored a child in an orphanage home in Bhaktapur, and we do help in a school in Bardia district in west Nepal which provides free education for landless people and we are sure you fund will help to remove the hunger of orphanage child. if you need any other information then please feel free to ask us, we will be happy to share with you at any time.
