Hi Nikhil

Portsmouth is a university town, and important naval town, so it’s a pretty lively place and will certainly keep you occupied. If you’re keen to learn something about its history as a port, I’d suggest heading to the Historic Dockyard (in the Royal Naval Base, end of Queen Street). You can check out a brilliant collection of ships and naval paraphernalia, including HMS Victory (Nelson’s ship, used in the Battle of Trafalgar) and HMS Warrior. Definitely go here: http://www.maryrose.org/ – the brand new Mary Rose Museum (opened in May this year), where you’ll find the hulk of this beautiful ship belonging to King Henry VIII, and its fascinating contents.

And you can’t miss the white Spinnaker Tower – climb up and enjoy the views over the town and sea.

If you like British literature, head to the modest Charles Dickens’ Birthplace http://www.charlesdickensbirthplace.co.uk/ – this house is where he was born and lived for a while, and it’s set up pretty much as it was when he was there in the nineteenth century.

Slightly out of Portsmouth is Southsea, a nice suburb with a shingle beach, aquarium and a few museums. The area is also a great spot for eating – there are lots of restaurants on Osborne Road and some good bars on Albert Road.

Hope that helps and enjoy your trip.

Hi Nikhil,

For starters, I’d suggest heading east to explore Chichester, which is a lovely cathedral city. From there you could venture inland to visit Fishbourne Roman Villa or out to the lovely West Wittering beach on the coast. If you’ve got a bit more time, perhaps catch a ferry over to the Isle of Wight.
