Travel earplugs

Avatar Image

Following on from the previous thread (http://www.roughguides.com/questions/cant-travel-without/), does anyone have recommendations for which earplugs to get for travelling? I find the cheap foam ones uncomfortable and irritating, and by morning they will have inevitably either fallen out of my ears, or I will have hurled them across the room in frustration. Any tips for a quiet night’s sleep?

Thanks!

Instead of looking for some ear plugs why dont you try yoga and some breathing exercises which makes you feel relaxed and you will have a nice sleep without any disturbance.

To be fair fretina, i love yoga, tai chi too and i even meditate on occasion but nothing blocks out the sound of thai bubble pop at full blast on an overnight coach or someone getting very friendly witha new acquaintance in a hostel room quite like earplugs! ;-)

Michael you made me laugh when you mentioned how to escape the constant din on an overnight flight of Thai bubble pop. I too meditate, but that music makes me want to medicate!!!!

As for Tai Chi, it would be great as a stress buster, but trying to find space to even exercise on many of the new planes, I find my 193 cm frame hitting the bulkhead, nevermind Tai Chi. Then with tai chi I’m sure that on some flights it would end up being like a conga line down the narrow aisle, with all of the senior travelers joining in! By senior, I’m talking about those passengers who are in my age category. I can see it now: “Plane diverted due to passengers relaxing doing full on Tai Chi?”

I use the wax earplugs and then often I will use a sound blocking headset with relaxing music playing, while I contemplate my next Tai Chi move. With the headset, I open my eyes to the sight of my fellow seat mates sleeping soundly due to my meditative music blasting from my headset?????

Unbelievable though it may be, there are whole websites devoted to selling ear plugs, so you’re clearly not alone in your search for the perfect specimen. Maybe the mouldable wax variety would suit you better? Otherwise, my alternative solution is the audiobook of The Name of the Rose, read by Michael Pennington. Much as I love the book, he has the most extraordinarily soporific voice which overcomes even the non-stop honking of Delhi.

Hi Helen,

To be honest I’ve found most of them to be pretty much the same regardless of price or type. I’ve used these on my last couple of trips http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000R2GF82 and they did the trick for me. Whether they will be good for you or not I can’t say for certain. Sorry I can’t be much more help.

Thanks both – I might buy a couple of different types to try them out. Good tip about Mr Pennington… I’ll get downloading!
