Looking forward to my first trip to Brighton in March. I’ll only have an afternoon/evening to explore. What are the “don’t miss” things to see and do? Would also appreciate food and drink recommendations. Thanks!

It’s an obvious choice but just take a walk through the Laines (both North and South) and you’ll realise why so many people fall in love with the place! Full of character, quirky shops, great food and loads of cracking pubs. You can’t go wrong!
Also if you do decide to stay the night don’t miss out on the coolest bar in town, The Green Door Store is hidden away under the arches of the train station and is always a great place for a drink and dance. always free, always good live bands! http://thegreendoorstore.co.uk/
Easy place to walk around and so much to see and be distracted by…!
The Pavilion is always worth a visit – the exotic architecture needs to be seen to be believed.
For a splurge, try the imaginative vegetarian offerings at Terre à Terre in the Lanes (they do afternoon tea too), or Boho Gelato just round the corner for frozen goodies, in a wide range of ever-changing flavours, scooped up from the basement ‘lab’.
The BBQ Shack at the World’s End pub caters for the more carnivorous customer. Ribs & pulled pork from a Texas-trained pitmaster are worth the trip up London Road.
Oh, and a stroll along the (pebble) beach never fails to lift the spirits – but do check the weather forecast first…
Thanks, Kate – forgot to mention that about Terre à Terre – they sadly missed the whole of their Christmas trade as a result, but they say they’re taking bookings from 4th February.
NB Food for Friends is another great vegetarian restaurant in the Lanes, and the Angel Food Bakery around the corner creates lip-smackingly decadent cakes.
To walk off such indulgences, head east along Upper St James’s St to Kemptown – it’ll reward you with a chance to forage through the bric-a-brac of the Brighton Flea Market, followed by an own-brewed pint next door at the brightly-painted Hand in Hand pub – you won’t forget either place in a hurry.
