Marrakesh and Essaouira

Hi folks

Off to Morocco in a month (4 days Marrakesh, 3 days Essaouira). Been to Marrakesh before – does anyone have any tips on more unusual things to do there? And any tips for Essaouira, or places to eat in either, much appreciated.

Essaouira is lovely. I would recommend to have a meal in the fish stalls at the Port. Very nice and cheap.
Like Olivia mentioned the Ourika Valley is a must, closer to Marrakech than the Atlas mountains in case you are running out of days and want a bit of adventure.

If you’re ever in need of a meal with something a little stronger than mint tea, Cafe Arabe in Marrakesh (http://www.cafearabe.com/) has a gorgeous roof terrace and does some lovely cocktails. I’d definitely recommend trying to find a cooking course, too. I spent an afternoon learning how to make tagine in my riad, courtesy of the owner’s sister, but there are lots more out there…

Maybe a day at a surf school in Essaouira?

Thanks Ellie! Am planning to do a cooking course as it turns out, but will check out Cafe Arabe for sure…

If you didn’t go last time, I would recommend a day trip to the Ourika Valley, the cool breeze and waterfalls make it seem worlds away from Marrakesh. If you can, plan your trip for a Monday and stop off at the weekly berber market – great for a glimpse of rural life.

I’m off to Essaouira this summer as well and have been thinking about doing some kitesurfing, heard good things about it! Might be a good option?

Marrakesh’s Maison de la Photographie museum, a few hundred metres east of the medresa, has a lovely collection of historical photos, with great stories about early photography in Morocco, plus reprints for sale. Best of all, the rooftop terrace overlooks the whole medina and serves a cracking 80 dirham 3-course menu for lunch. http://www.maisondelaphotographie.ma
In Essaouira the fish stalls are a must, if you don’t mind being hassled and ripped off in a friendly way; in the medina look up the lovely Cafe Tara in the little square in the Mellah (formerly Jewish) area.
