Hi, I am going to Malaysia in august and planning the following….
Day 1 (arrive KL afternoon) to 6not sure
Day 7 fly to tawau for diving in Sipadan-Mabu
Day 13 fly from tawau to Kota Kinabalu
Day 14 & 15 climbing mount Kinabalu
Day 16 Kota Kinabalu ( hot springs / meat flower)
Day 17 fly Kota Kinabalu to KL
Day 18 to 20 KL then home.

What can I do for first 6 days, stay on west island and avoid spending too much money as second half has flights / diving and mountain.

Hi there…here’re my two cents…If this is your 1st trip to Malaysia and you are into nature and adventure (good local food included), then I would suggest you check out Sarawak in East Malaysia. Below are some links that can hopefully give you insights into the state and what it has to offer. You probably will not be able to cover all places in 6 days, so just check out what suits you. It’s not expensive to travel around Sarawak, so have look:

However, if you choose to stick around West Malaysia, I’d highly recommend checking out Penang & Melaka. Kuala Lumpur is just another city, so unless you are into city life/sky scrapers, you probably have more fun elsewhere.

Hi nice itinerary,

I try also to climb the Mt Kinabalu but unfortunately I give up when I was close to the top ;-(

Unfortunately I was a bit sick that days.

Regarding the 6 days in peninsula you could visit places that are nearby the capital as Malacca, Cameron Highlands and maybe Cherating if you like surfing.

In Cherating you can found chalet for only USD 20 per night. The sea is not amazing but the local atmosphere is really nice and we met many local peoples.

We done this trip in Malaysia last year and we did mostly using bus transportation. Few excursion we bought online trough orangutravel.
